Psalms 119
Mem and Nun

Mem
Who is the man who desires life,
and loves many days, that he may see good?
Psalms 34:12 (34:13 Hebrew)

Nun
Keep your tongue from evil,
and your lips from speaking deceit.
Psalms 34:13 (34:14 Hebrew)

Introduction
So far we have seen this things in the previous eight stanzas:

  • Previously we looked at the eleventh and twelfth stanza, the letters kaf and lamed.
  • The kaf showed how G-d covers and atones for His people.
  • The lamed showed how G-d’s authority controls and protects us as with a shepherd’s staff.

Mem:  Ma-Ahav = “How I Love” ( Verses 97-104)

  • mem = mighty, chaos, overpower
  • Picture = water
  • Spelling = mem-mem sofit
  • Value = 40
  • Sound = m
  • Meaning = G-d waters His servants
  • This stanza shows that G-d gives life-sustaining knowledge to His servants. G-d waters His people with understanding and insight.

Note: mem as a prefix to a word means “from” or “than”. The “final form” (comes at the end of a word, called “mem sofit”) looks “closed” at the bottom. The sages say that the 2 forms of mem show Moshe [Moses] and Mashiach [Messiah] – Moses is open but the Messiah is the “hidden” water.

97 Oh, how I love Your Torah! It is my meditation all the day.
98 You, through Your Mitzvot, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your Edut are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your Pikudim.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your Davar.
102 I have not departed from Your Mishpatim, for You Yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are Your Imrah to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through Your Pikudim I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.

Nun: Ner = “Lamp” ( Verses 105-112)

  • n n     nun = Heir, Son (nun sofit = Ultimate Heir), humility
  • Picture = seed, fish (moving)
  • Spelling = nun-yod-nun sofit
  • Value = 50
  • Sound = n
  • Meaning = G-d gives life through the Heir (the Seed) which was promised!
  • This stanza shows how Yeshua, the promised Seed provided light for us – that we might be fellow-heirs with Him.

Note: one of five letters that have a “sofit” or “final form” when at the end of a word. Nun is the picture of humility – and yet nun sofit is upright – and in a Torah scroll takes the form of a zayin (weapon) – refer to Rev 19:11-16.
For no clear reason, Num 10:35-36 in a Torah scroll is bracketed by 2 upside-down “nuns”. The sages say that these 2 verses are a “book of Torah” in themselves. They are preceded by the invitation for Jethro to travel with Israel to the Promised Land, and followed by G-d sending fire on Israelites for complaining...

105 Your Davar is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn and confirmed that I will keep Your righteous Mishpatim.
107 I am afflicted very much; revive me, O HaShem, according to Your Davar.
108 Accept, I pray, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O HaShem, and teach me Your Mishpatim.
109 My life is continually in my hand, yet I do not forget Your Torah.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me, yet I have not strayed from Your Pikudim.
111 Your Edut I have taken as a heritage forever, for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
112 I have inclined my heart to perform Your Chukim forever, to the very end.
