The Lawgiver
“Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against HaShem and against His Messiah saying, ‘Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.’ …’Yet I have set My King on My holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree:’ HaShem has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; you shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”
Psalms 2:1-3; 6-9
Introduction
- So far in our study we have seen several different tracks:
- How G-d manifests Himself to His own.
- How G-d progressively reveals His promise for a Seed.
- How G-d provides prophetic blueprints of Messiah, and His work in midrashic elements in the lives of men like Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
- We are now wrapping up Genesis with a look at Messiah that skips over His first coming: it is a prophecy of the Last Days.
- The targumim show that since ancient times, this passage has been seen as Messianic.
The Scepter
- Gen 49:10: Shebet: tribal staff.
- Ps 2:8-9: A shebet of iron. The nations (goyim) as inheritance. This is a primary Messianic Psalm.
- Ps 45:6: A shebet of righteousness. Whose throne? Both Ps 2 and Ps 45 are quoted in Heb 1.
- Luke 1:32-33; Rev 11:15; Rev 19:11-16: Yeshua’s shebet.
The Lawgiver
- Chakak: One who gives chokim or kingly decrees.
- Ps 60:6-12: This is One who delivers justice.
- Is 33:22: The King is the Lawgiver.
- Is 49:16: A King Who inscribes the names of His subjects upon His hands.
- “Between His feet” – i.e. the Promised Seed – coming through the offspring of Judah, and eventually David.
Shiloh
- Likely from the same root as Shalom. Peace.
- Ps 122:6-9: The peace of Jerusalem will not come by negotiation – but by the victory of Sar Shalom.
- Is 9:6: Sar Shalom. Not a wimpy title: the title of a Warrior.
The Obedience (Blamelessness) of the Peoples
- Yikahah: only here and in Prov 3:17. Obedience, or blameless actions.
- Amim the peoples, the nations.
- Ps 47:1-4: The nations subdued.
- Is 2:1-3: The nations seeking Him on His mount Zion.
- Is 11:10: An ensign to the amim, and goyim will seek Him. His resting place will be glorious.
- Rom 15:12-13.
- Col 1:19-21
The Dance Parable
- How does what we learned relate to our Parable of the ‘Dance’ with Messiah?
- Specifically, how can we take the progressive revelation of the Promised Seed from Eve, to Shem, to Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob, to Judah and now to the Davidic kingly line – and respond today?
- He is King now. Do you act like it?
Summary
-
We have seen only a glimpse. G-d’s revelation of His plan always beckons us to dig deeper. What we have seen so far is only a taste to cause us to seek Him more diligently.
“I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of
Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they
brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a
kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed.”
Daniel 7:13-14
