Lesson Eight (Chapter 27)
King of the Jews
“Now Yeshua
stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the
King of the Jews?”
Matthew 27:11
“And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram
caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered
him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham
called the name of that place HaShem-jireh [shall see, and make it manifest] as it is said to this day, in
the mount of Ad-nai it shall be seen.
Genesis
22:13-14
Introduction
- Our study last week focused on the Passover Seder that Yeshua had with His talmidim just before offering Himself as the perfect Pascal Lamb.
- We saw that the 4 “I Wills” of the Passover account included “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm”.
- We saw that the word “Kingdom” is no longer used after chapter 26.
- Now it is time to accomplish that redemption, by the King Himself.
Which Yeshua? The Switch.
- We saw in the historical overview the bookends of verse 17 (He is Messiah) and 37(He is the Son of G-d). Situated in the middle, and for the context of the entire crucifixion account is verse 37 (He is King).
- 27:17: Bar Abbas is the Aramaic for ben Abba or “son of the father. This was the surname of the criminal. He first name was Yeshua. Pilate offered to free one and crucify the other: Yeshua HaMashiach [Yeshua the Messiah] or Yeshua ben Abba [Yeshua son of Father].
- The switch takes place. The perfect Yeshua takes the place of the criminal – showing our substitutionary replacement as well.
The King Is Revealed!
- Throughout this study we have seen the Kingdom message: “Repent, the Kingdom of G-d is at hand!”
- 27:9: Finally, the King is revealed! Who is this King, and what right does He have to the throne?
- 1Sam 8:4-8: The Kingdom was G-d’s – our people wanted a man instead. They wanted a “god-man” for king. All they got was a man, because they did not heed the call to repent (vs 8).
- Gen 12:1-3; 2Sam 7:8-13: G-d promises in the Abrahamic/David covenant to bless all nations through the Seed. G-d promises to return to the throne!
The King’s First Coronation
- Matt 27:11: King of the Jews, and the acceptance of the role.
- 27:27-29: A scarlet robe, a twisted crown, a reed scepter.
- 27:35-37: Public acknowledgement: King of the Jews!
- 27:39-43: Acceptance of Him as King (they didn’t know it, but He WAS going to “come down”).
- 27:54: G-d has returned to the throne. Not just Messiah. Not just a king. G-d Himself, as King and Messiah: the “Son of G-d.”
The Cross and the Akedah
- Gen 22:1-18; Heb 11:17-19: The Akedah [the “binding”] when Abraham offered Isaac is a type and foreshadowing of what took place later on the same mountain. Golgotha is on the ridge named Moriah. Look at the typology:
- Substitutionary sacrifice.
- Covenant love.
- Provision of G-d for redemption.
- Resurrection from the dead.
Not a People Cast Off
- Rom 11:1-2: G-d has NOT cast off His people Israel.
- Rom 11:8-12: The plan is to not only redeem Israel and to rule over a Kingdom of Israel. The plan is to be King of the Universe. Provoke them to jealousy with Gentile inclusion.
- Jer 31-34: The “New Covenant” is still a covenant for the house of Israel and the house of Judah (want to join in?)
- Jer 31:37-40: G-d has not cast off His people Israel and Judah.
- Rom 11:24-36: Natural branches grafted back in.
Summary
-
Have you met the King? His Kingdom is at hand, and His Second Coronation will be the one to see.
