Lesson Fourteen
Korban: Sacrifices/Offerings
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.
Leviticus 17:11
Introduction
- By looking at the High Priesthood of Yeshua, comparing and contrasting it to the priestly order of Aaron we learned that they differ in domain – and hence in duration. Although the priesthood of Aaron is eternal, the priests of Aaron are not.
- Yeshua, is a Priest forever – as He lives forever.
The Problem – the Solution
- Exodus 40:33-35: The problem is the fact that although the Tabernacle and the Priesthood is ready, man cannot approach the Holy G-d.
- Lev 1:1-2: The solution is that atonement [covering] is available through korban.
Cain and Abel
- Gen 4:1-15: Both Cain and Abel offered from their labors. Cain, from the fruit of the ground, and Abel from the flocks.
- Cain’s was NOT rejected because it was not of the flock – it was rejected because HE was rejected.
- Abel’s was accepted because HE was accepted.
The Purpose of Korban
- Lev 4:20: Atonement – forgiveness
- Lev 5:10: Atonement – forgiveness
- Lev 6:6-7: Atonement – forgiveness
- Lev 19:22: Forgiveness
- Lev 17:11: Blood makes atonement for the soul [nefesh].
- Heb 10:4; 11: Blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins.
- No contradiction. The korbanot were never meant to take away sins in an eternal sense. They were always temporal in nature.
Five Major Korbanot
- Korban = draw near. Plural: korbanot.
- Lev 1: Korban Olah: (not burnt offering). olah = ascend. To drawn near and then ascend into HaShem’s Presence. Purpose: a sweet aroma, to draw near. Voluntary, not sin related, not eaten.
- Lev 2: Korban Minchah: grain offering. Purpose: a memorial, a sweet aroma, to draw near. Voluntary, not sin related, eaten.
- Lev 3: Korban Shelamim: peace offering. A sweet aroma, to draw near. Voluntary, not sin related, eaten.
- Lev 4: Korban Chatat: sin offering. Atonement and forgiveness. Not voluntary, sin related, not eaten.
- Lev 5: Korban Asham: guilt offering. Forgiveness of tresspass, and atonement. Not voluntary, sin related. Eaten.
Contrasts
- Heb 10:4; 11 contrasting Heb 9:13: Cleansing of the flesh does not equal “taking away sins”. As with the contrast between the Tabernacle on earth and the Tabernacle of heaven – and the Priesthood of Aaron and the Priesthood of Yeshua: Different domains.
Summary
- The sacrifices were never meant to take away sins. They wre never meant to perfect men and women – they were a means for sinful man to approach the Holy G-d.
- Understanding temporal applicability is key to understanding the picture that is emerging in this book. Remember, it about the World to Come that we are speaking.
